Our own Game

I just had an idea.
Maybe we could use our fantastic computer skills to make our own game, based off Harry Potter.
Ideas/replies/comments?

don't we have like masses of other stuff (HWK) to do, or is that just me?

harry potter is nice. the games are not. we'd easily outdo the originals

We won;t have to worry about copyrights if we only do it for fun, and not for profit and reference correctly, as stated in the fair distributions of information act (or something along that names).

Making a fan game wouldn't be any more illegal than making a fanfic, I guess... again, as long as it's not been done for profit.

One question:

What language?

Well we would chose if we actually get enough support.

Well, we could cobble something together in gamemaker (would require people downloading it)
Python is relatively easy, but it would require lines and lines and lines of code if you want the game to go on for any decent length of time, and you're not fussed about it only being a text-based game =)
Or it could just be a word game, like group story telling and stuff.
We could rip of Dungeons and Dragons.
Does anyone actually know how to play that?

Whoever said that python games had to be text-based? Pygame is a module you can add to python.

I think a text-based game would be awesome.
Graphics would be even cooler, but i think text based would be fine

If we all work together and use our skills co-operatively and utililse our strengths then nothing can stop us from doing it.
(P.S. I have the paid version of RPG Maker VX Ace, if we want to use that)

If we make something with graphics, then we either need to be able to create decent graphics, or know where to get some free which are decent and suit our needs.
We could just go for 32-bit graphics. I could make a chibi 32-bit harry potter X)
Text-based means we don't need to create any graphics.
For those who've never played a text-based game, Zork gives you the general idea, but the puzzles are probably a little advanced for beginners : P Heck, had to use a walkthrough to find my way around, and I still got lost! Hint: enter through the west side of the house, and cyclopses are afraid of Ulysses (Or is it Odysseus?)
So yeah.

What perspective will it be in? 1st person, 3rd person or like Mario and stuff?

By the way, if we were to make a Harry Potter game, would we base it off the whole Harry Potter series, one of the books or do a spin-off story of our own?

Maybe we could make a game adaptation of our RP; include our own characters. That way it would be our game and not just an adaptation of someone else's story.

Yeah, that would be so cool. And an text based adventure game (maybe with images on top of, coughcoughSyvenneorHelgacough) would be simple enough, given the engine. Of course we'd probably have to save this until after Christmas, what with exams and the Christmas special which you should all be working on and following the thread...

We totally should still be doing this I have absolutely no coding or artistic skills though
so i'm not really useful.
I could write the storyline, though! And the dialogue!
(Syvenne's dialogue is much better than mine, but still)

I should be doing my music assignment. Why am I not doing my music assignment?

I can do the coding.
Now to figure out what to do it on. We could do just a text based adventure, so just use python or something.
We could use RPG maker. I have that, as well as Helga.
Syvenne has Game Maker, I'm pretty sure.
Or if we want to be really fancy we could use UDK. However that would mean real effort in making a 3D environment and stuff.
